One day, Doña Elvira, an old woman with kind eyes and hands full of soil, noticed a small red drop falling from one of Carmesí's petals. It wasn't dew. It was a tear! A tear of blood! Doña Elvira was shocked. She had never seen anything like this.

"What's wrong, Carmesí?" asked Doña Elvira, gently touching the petal with her wrinkled finger.

To everyone's surprise, the rose answered. Her voice was a soft whisper, like the wind between the leaves. "I'm sad, Doña Elvira," she said. "All the other flowers have friends. The sunflower laughs with the sun, the daisy dances with the butterfly, the lavender whispers secrets to the bees. I... I have no one."

"I'm sorry," said Doña Elvira to the gardener. "Carmesí is not for sale. She belongs here, in this garden, with her friend Musguito."
