The Story of the Crocodile and the Monkey

One sunny morning, a little monkey named Momo was swinging through the trees near the river, chattering and giggling to herself. She had always loved the water, but today she wanted to try something new—she wanted to float on a log like the big fish did. So she leapt from a branch and landed on a thick, round log that was bobbing gently in the current.

But when Momo tried to climb onto the log, it slid away from her with a splash! She scrambled after it, but just as she reached the edge, the log floated right out of her grasp. Before she could cry out, she heard a deep, grumbly voice say, “Well, well. What have we here?”

Looking up, Momo saw a crocodile named Crump, sitting on the same log she had just fallen off. His eyes were narrow, and his tail was curled tightly around the log. “You’re in my spot,” he said, not looking at her. “This is my log.”

Momo’s heart thudded. She had heard stories about crocodiles, but she didn’t want to be mean. “I’m sorry,” she said, her voice small. “I didn’t know it was yours.”

Crump’s tail tightened around the log. “You should have asked first,” he said. “But I suppose I can let you stay if you promise to keep quiet.”

Momo nodded quickly. She didn’t want to make the crocodile angry, even though she was worried about the log drifting away. They sat in silence, watching the water ripple around them. Then, Momo noticed something: the log was moving more and more with the current, and it was beginning to float away from the shore.

“I think we should try to get back,” she said softly. “If we don’t, we might end up in the middle of the river.”

Crump grumbled but didn’t argue. “You’re right,” he said. “But how?”

Momo thought for a moment. “If we work together, maybe we can steer the log back to the bank. You can use your tail to push it, and I can use my arms to pull it.”

Crump raised an eyebrow. “You think I’ll listen to a little monkey?”

Momo met his eyes. “I think we both want to get back to land. That’s a good reason to work together.”

Crump sighed. “Alright. But if we fall into the water, you’re on your own.”

They began to work. Momo climbed onto the log and held on tightly, while Crump used his strong tail to push the log in the right direction. They worked side by side, moving slowly but surely back toward the shore. The sun shone on the water, and birds chirped above them. It was almost like a game, but both of them knew it was serious.

After a long time, the log finally bumped gently onto the riverbank. Momo hopped off first, then Crump followed. They stood there for a moment, looking at each other. “Thank you,” Momo said. “You were a good teammate.”

Crump grunted. “You’re not bad yourself. Maybe next time, you can ask before you jump onto my log.”

Momo giggled. “I’ll remember that.”

And so, the monkey and the crocodile became friends, and they never forgot the day they learned that even the smallest voice can make a big difference when it speaks with kindness and courage.
