Free · pick a voiceOnce upon a time, in a cozy little workshop filled with the scent of pine and sawdust, an old woodcarver named Geppetto worked on his finest creation yet. He was carving a puppet from a peculiar piece of wood that seemed to hum with a life of its own. When he finished, he named the puppet Pinocchio. That night, as Geppetto slept, a shimmering Blue Fairy appeared in a swirl of azure light. With a gentle wave of her wand, she brought Pinocchio to life. "To become a real boy," she whispered, "you must prove yourself brave, truthful, and unselfish."
The next morning, Geppetto was overjoyed to find his puppet walking and talking. He sold his only coat to buy Pinocchio schoolbooks, sending him off with a kiss. But the world was full of temptations. On his way to school, Pinocchio met a sly fox and a silly cat who promised him fame and candy. Forgetting his promise to Geppetto, Pinocchio followed them into trouble. Each time Pinocchio told a lie to hide his mistakes, his wooden nose grew longer and longer, until it was so heavy he could barely lift his head! Birds even began to nest on the tip of it.
Ashamed and lost, Pinocchio realized he had been foolish. With the help of a wise, talking Cricket, he escaped his captors and set out to find his father. He learned that Geppetto, worried sick, had sailed into the ocean to find him, only to be swallowed by a massive, ancient whale. Without a second thought, Pinocchio dived into the deep blue sea. Inside the whale’s dark, cavernous belly, he found Geppetto, weak but alive. Using his quick wit, Pinocchio started a fire with some old wood, making the whale sneeze them both out into the safety of the waves.
Pinocchio dragged Geppetto to the shore, exhausted but triumphant. He had risked everything to save his father. Suddenly, the Blue Fairy appeared once more, her light brighter than ever. "You have shown true courage and a kind heart," she said. In a flash of brilliant light, Pinocchio’s wooden joints turned to skin and bone, and his painted eyes sparkled with real life. He was no longer a puppet, but a real boy. Geppetto hugged his son tightly, knowing that their greatest adventure was just beginning.
