In the heart of the Whispering Jungle, where the ferns grew as tall as skyscrapers and the flowers glowed like neon lamps, lived a young boy named Iyad. Iyad was ten years old, with messy black hair that always seemed to have a leaf or two tucked into it, and skin the color of warm olives. He didn't live in a house made of bricks; he lived in a world of giants. While the other creatures of the valley were massive dinosaurs with voices that could shake the clouds, Iyad was just a boy in a bright green tunic, and his voice was as quiet as a summer breeze.
Iyad spent his days with his best friends, a group of young dinosaurs. There was T-Rexy, a small but loud Tyrannosaurus, and Trike, a three-horned dinosaur who loved to charge into piles of soft moss. Every morning, the dinosaurs would gather at the Great Stone to practice their roars. T-Rexy would take a deep breath and let out a 'BOOM!' that made the dragonflies scatter. Trike would stomp his feet and produce a 'HONK!' that echoed through the canyons. But when it was Iyad’s turn, he would puff out his chest, open his mouth wide, and all that would come out was a tiny, high-pitched 'Squeak!'
The bigger dinosaurs would chuckle kindly, their tails thumping the ground like drums. 'Don't worry, Iyad,' they would say. 'You’re just a small dinosaur in a boy’s body. Maybe your roar is just hiding.' But Iyad didn't want his roar to hide. He wanted to find it. He wanted to be able to call out across the valley and let everyone know he was brave and strong.
One afternoon, feeling discouraged after a particularly quiet squeak, Iyad decided to seek the advice of the oldest creature in the jungle: a Pterodactyl named Pip who lived atop the Crystal Peaks. Pip was legendary for his wisdom and his vibrant, orange-and-blue wings that shimmered like a sunset. Iyad hiked through the thickets, his brown leather sandals crunching on the prehistoric soil, until he reached the base of the glowing Echo Caves.

There, perched on a shimmering purple crystal, was Pip. 'I can’t roar, Pip,' Iyad explained, his shoulders slumped. 'I try and I try, but I’m just too small. How can a boy like me ever find a voice that belongs in this valley?'
Pip tilted his head, his golden eyes sparkling. 'A roar, young Iyad, is not made of air and noise,' the ancient bird chirped. 'A true roar is made of heart. It is the sound of your courage finding its way into the world. You don’t need to be giant to have a giant voice. You just need a reason to use it.'
Iyad wasn't sure what that meant, but Pip invited him to stay and practice in the Echo Caves. For days, Iyad stood among the bioluminescent crystals, shouting into the darkness. He tried shouting his name. He tried growling like a tiger. He tried imitating the thunder. Each time, the cave echoed back a slightly louder version of his voice, but it still didn't feel like a roar. It felt like a boy making noise.
On the fifth day, a sudden shadow fell over the valley. A massive storm was rolling in, the kind that turned the sky a bruised purple and made the trees groan. From his high vantage point, Iyad looked down and saw a terrifying sight. A baby Brachiosaurus, no older than a toddler, had wandered away from the herd and was now trapped on a narrow mudbank near the rising river. The herd was far away, huddled under the cliffs, unable to hear the baby’s frightened cries over the howling wind.

Iyad’s heart hammered against his ribs. He knew the mudbank wouldn't hold for long. He scrambled down the mountain, his green tunic flapping in the gale. He reached the edge of the cliff overlooking the river, but he was still too far for the adult dinosaurs to see him. He waved his arms, but the rain was too thick. He tried his usual squeak, but the wind swallowed it whole.
He looked at the baby dinosaur, shivering and scared. Suddenly, Pip’s words echoed in his mind: 'A roar is the sound of your courage finding its way into the world.'
Iyad closed his eyes. He didn't think about how small he was. He didn't think about his vocal cords. He thought about the baby dinosaur. He thought about his friends. He felt a warmth starting in his toes, traveling up through his chest, and filling his lungs with a fire he had never felt before. He planted his feet firmly in the mud, threw his head back, and opened his heart.
'ROAAAAAAR!'
The sound was magnificent. It wasn't just a noise; it was a golden wave of sound that cut through the thunder and sliced through the rain. It was the sound of a ten-year-old boy who was fiercer than any T-Rex. The adult Brachiosaurus herd turned their long necks in unison, alerted by the powerful call. They saw Iyad pointing toward the river and quickly moved to rescue the trapped baby, forming a living bridge with their massive bodies.
As the storm cleared and the sun began to peek through the clouds, the jungle fell silent. The dinosaurs looked up at the boy on the cliff. T-Rexy let out a respectful grunt, and Trike bowed his head. Iyad stood tall, a wide smile on his face. He didn't need to roar every day, but he knew now that the voice was there, waiting for whenever his heart needed to be heard. From that day on, Iyad was no longer known as the boy who squeaked. He was Iyad, the Boy with the Golden Roar, the smallest giant in the Whispering Jungle.
