Leo woke up to a magical sight. Outside his bedroom window, the world had been transformed into a sparkling, fluffy kingdom of white. 'Snow!' he cheered, jumping out of his warm bed. But then he looked at the ticking clock on his nightstand. The big yellow school bus would be arriving in just twenty minutes, and he wasn't even dressed yet. He needed his winter clothes, and he needed them fast.
First, Leo dashed to the hallway closet. He pulled out a pair of colorful swim goggles, a dusty beach ball, and a plastic pirate hat, but no winter coat. 'Where could it be?' he muttered, his breath hitching in excitement. He checked behind the tall vacuum cleaner and under a pile of old newspapers. He found a lost umbrella and a single rain boot, but his thick blue coat was nowhere to be seen. The clock was ticking louder now.
Next, he sprinted back to his bedroom. He took a deep breath and dove headfirst under his bed. It was a dark jungle of lost socks and old comic books. He found a toy dinosaur he hadn't seen since summer and a lone red sneaker, but his fuzzy hat was still missing. Time was slipping away. He could hear the distant, low rumble of the snowplow clearing the streets nearby.
'Barnaby! Help me find my gear!' Leo called to his golden retriever. Barnaby was usually an expert at finding lost treasures, but right now, he was just spinning in happy circles near the laundry room. Leo followed the dog, his heart racing. Barnaby stopped suddenly and pointed his wet nose toward a large, overflowing basket of freshly dried towels.
Leo dug through the warm, soft fabric. Suddenly, his fingers felt something woolly. 'Found them!' he yelled. Tucked deep inside a folded towel were his lucky green mittens and his bright blue coat. But his hat was still missing! Barnaby barked and nudged a pile of scarves resting on the wooden bench. There it was—the fuzzy hat with the giant white pom-pom on top!
Leo scrambled into his gear. He zipped his coat, pulled on his mittens, and plopped the hat onto his head. Just as he finished, the familiar honk of the school bus echoed through the frosty air. He grabbed his backpack, gave Barnaby a quick pat on the head, and raced out the door. He stepped into the crisp, cold air, ready for a snowy adventure at school, all thanks to his furry best friend.
