Lucía, the Guardian of the Shining River

Lucía was a curious girl, quick as a cat and lively as a hummingbird. She lived in a small village surrounded by green mountains and a river that, long ago, shone like silver: the Shining River. But lately, the river no longer shone. It was dirty, full of trash, and sad. Lucía felt a tug in her heart every time she saw it like that.

One day, while walking near the river, Lucía heard a sob. She approached carefully and saw a little trout, trapped between two plastic bottles. The trout was struggling to breathe. Lucía, gently, removed the bottles and set the trout free. The grateful trout swam quickly into the depths of the river.

"This has to stop!" Lucía thought. She decided that she, a little girl, would save the Shining River. First, she talked to her friends. She told them about the trapped trout and how sad it was to see the river so polluted. At first, some didn’t pay much attention. "You’re just a girl, Lucía," they said. "You can’t do anything." But Lucía didn’t give up. She kept talking with passion, showing photos of the polluted river and explaining how pollution affected animals and plants.

Little by little, her friends began to understand. They decided to help her. Together, they organized a river cleanup. They invited their families, neighbors, and all the people in the village. Lucía talked to the town mayor and explained her idea. The mayor, impressed by the girl’s initiative, offered his support. He provided educational materials and helped organize activities for the club. The Guardians of the Shining River met every Saturday afternoon. They learned about the river’s plants and animals, made crafts from recycled materials, and organized outings to clean the surroundings.

Lucía also visited the village schools to talk to children about the importance of taking care of the planet. She told them stories about the animals that lived in the river and explained how pollution affected them. The children were moved by her stories and promised to help her protect the Shining River.

Over time, the Shining River began to recover. The water became clearer, the fish returned, and the aquatic plants bloomed. The people of the village learned to value their river and take care of it. No one threw trash into it anymore.

One day, Lucía was walking near the river when she saw something that made her smile. The sun shone on the water, and the river sparkled like silver, just as she remembered from her grandmother’s stories. The Shining River had regained its shine.

Lucía knew it had been hard work, but she also knew it had been worth it. She had shown that even a little girl could make a big difference. And from that day on, Lucía was known as Lucía, the Guardian of the Shining River, an example for all children in the world.

Now, every year they celebrate Shining River Day, where everyone gathers to remember the importance of protecting the environment and honor Lucía, the girl who never gave up. They sing songs, plant trees, and release small trout into the river, making sure the Shining River continues to shine forever.
