Leo moved into the creaky Victorian house on a Tuesday. By Wednesday, he knew something was wrong. It wasn’t the peeling floral wallpaper or the way the floorboards groaned like a tired giant. It was the silence. The house felt as if it were holding its breath, waiting for a sound that never came.
While exploring the attic, Leo—an adventurous eleven-year-old with tan skin and messy black hair—found a tall grandfather clock hidden behind a heavy velvet curtain. He was wearing his favorite bright yellow hoodie and blue jeans, which glowed like a beacon against the dusty grey of the room. The clock was beautiful but unsettling; it had no hands and no numbers. Instead, its face was a swirling pool of deep, liquid obsidian that seemed to swallow the light around it.
Suddenly, the clock began to hum. A low, vibrating thrum started in the base and climbed up into Leo’s chest. Slowly, a single silver hand materialized from the black void, pointing directly at him.
“Tick,” the clock whispered. It wasn’t a mechanical sound; it sounded like a dry leaf skittering across a tombstone.
Leo looked down and gasped. His shadow on the floor was shivering. As the clock continued to hum, the edges of his shadow began to stretch and peel away from his sneakers. It looked like dark ink being sucked toward the obsidian face of the clock. Panicked, Leo tried to run, but his feet felt heavy, as if the floor were turning into molasses.
The room grew freezing. The shadows of the rafters began to detach as well, swirling around the room like frantic dark ribbons. Leo realized the clock wasn’t just measuring time; it was consuming the very essence of the light’s reflection.
“You can’t have it!” Leo shouted, his voice trembling. He remembered the small pocket mirror his mother had given him for the move. He fumbled in his pocket, pulled it out, and caught a stray beam of afternoon sun filtering through the grimy attic window. With a steady hand, he aimed the reflected light directly into the center of the obsidian clock face.
The clock let out a piercing shriek—a sound like a thousand mirrors shattering at once. The silver hand vanished. The shadows snapped back to their rightful places, tethered once more to the furniture and to Leo’s feet. The attic returned to its dusty, silent self. Leo breathed a heavy sigh of relief, but as he turned to leave, he noticed the clock had vanished entirely, leaving only a faint, circular scorch mark on the floor.
