The Rabbit Who Told a Small Lie

Ollie the rabbit loved carrots more than any other vegetable in the garden. One afternoon, while hopping past Mrs. Hensley's vegetable patch, he could not resist nibbling the tops off three perfect carrots. When Mrs. Hensley came out and asked who had been in her garden, Ollie's heart thumped. "Not me," he said quickly. "I saw a big brown rabbit from the other side of the meadow do it."

Mrs. Hensley believed him, and Ollie hopped away feeling relieved. But the next day, she mentioned the mysterious rabbit to the other animals, describing him as sneaky and untrustworthy. Ollie felt a small, uncomfortable twist in his stomach, but he said nothing.

A few days later, his friend Daisy the duck came to him, upset. "Everyone thinks there's a rabbit going around eating gardens and lying about it," she said. "They're starting to watch all the rabbits more closely now, even the ones who never did anything wrong." Ollie thought of his cousins, who now got shooed away from gardens they had never touched, and the twist in his stomach grew.

That evening, Ollie hopped slowly back to Mrs. Hensley's garden. His paws felt heavier with every step. "It was me," he said quietly. "There was no other rabbit. I ate your carrots, and then I lied because I didn't want to get in trouble."

Mrs. Hensley was quiet for a moment. "Thank you for telling me the truth," she finally said. "That took courage. And because you were honest, we can fix this together — you can help me plant new carrots instead of being punished for old ones."

Ollie spent the next week helping plant a new row of carrots, and though his paws got tired, his stomach finally felt light again. The other rabbits stopped being watched so closely, and Ollie never had to carry the weight of a lie again.

Weeks later, when a new patch of carrots pushed up green and healthy, Mrs. Hensley let Ollie pick the very first one, still warm from the sun. "You earned that one honestly," she said. Ollie thought it tasted better than any carrot he had ever eaten before — maybe, he decided, because he hadn't had to hide anything to enjoy it.

Moral: A small lie can grow bigger than the mistake it was hiding, but the truth — even when it's hard to say — always makes things lighter.
