Rusty was a small, round robot made of polished sapphire-blue chrome. On the morning of his first day at the Academy of Gadgets, his internal cooling fans whirred like a swarm of nervous bees. He checked his reflection in the hallway mirror, carefully adjusting his bright yellow knit scarf and making sure his large, circular green eyes were glowing steadily.
"You will do great," his motherboard had whispered earlier. But as Rusty stood before the towering school gates, he wasn't so sure. The hallway was a chaotic symphony of clanking metal and whirring gears. Huge robots with heavy treads and sleek drones with spinning propellers zoomed past him. Rusty felt like a tiny bolt in a giant engine. He preferred the quiet corners of his workshop to the loud, fast-paced world outside.

In his first class, "Creative Construction," the teacher—a magnificent copper-plated robot named Mrs. Rivet—asked the students to introduce themselves. When it was Rusty’s turn, he stood up, but his voice module felt stuck. He opened his mouth, but only a tiny, metallic click came out. The other students began to whisper. Rusty’s circuits heated up with embarrassment, turning his blue cheeks a faint shade of violet. He sat down quickly, wishing he could simply vanish.
At lunch, the school’s central power core—a massive crystalline sphere in the courtyard—began to emit a strange, discordant hum. The lights flickered, and the floor began to vibrate. The louder robots started shouting and banging on the protective casing, trying to solve the problem with noise and force.

Rusty stayed silent. Because he wasn't talking, he could hear something the others missed: a rhythmic vibration coming from deep within the machinery. He followed the sound, weaving through the crowd. He spotted a loose golden bolt vibrating against a high-pressure steam pipe.
Carefully, Rusty reached in. With his small, precise fingers, he tightened the bolt and realigned a glowing fuse. Instantly, the discordant humming stopped, replaced by a smooth, happy purr. The lights stabilized, glowing a warm amber. The courtyard went silent. Mrs. Rivet walked over and placed a heavy, metallic hand on Rusty’s shoulder. "Sometimes," she said, her voice booming with pride, "the best way to solve a problem is to listen instead of talk." Rusty beamed, his green eyes glowing brighter than ever. He realized his shyness wasn't a glitch; it was his greatest strength.
