One crisp morning in the heart of Maplewood Forest, a tiny squirrel named Nora scurried through the golden leaves, her bushy tail swishing with excitement. She had found the most perfect apple, red and shiny, nestled in the crook of an old oak tree. She nibbled it just once and decided to save the rest for later. But as she tucked it into her nest, she heard a soft whimper nearby.
A little hedgehog named Hugo lay curled up beneath a fern, his belly empty and eyes tired. Nora looked at the apple in her paws and then at Hugo’s sad face. She hesitated. She had worked hard to find the apple, and it was her only one. But then she thought of all the times Hugo had shared his berries with her when she was hungry. She gently placed the apple beside him and whispered, “Here. You can have it.”
Hugo’s eyes widened with surprise. “But I don’t want to take it,” he said, his voice trembling. “You need it more than I do.” Nora shook her head. “No, you need it more. I’ve got plenty of acorns to eat. You don’t.” And with a warm smile, she skipped off, leaving the apple for Hugo.
The next day, Nora was surprised to find Hugo waiting for her at the base of the oak tree. He had a small, green apple in his paws. “I found this,” he said, offering it to her. “It’s not as big as yours, but I wanted to share it with you.” Nora’s heart swelled with joy. She realized that honesty and kindness had given her something even better than an apple — a true friend.
The moral of the story is: Honesty and kindness can lead to the greatest treasures of all.
